While I'm fairly positive about the game tracking each individual animal, I'm not 100% certain. I DO know for certain it's tracking how much hunting you're doing and that in my first couple playthroughs when I was shooting tons of bison because I wasn't certain how much food I was getting from them they became extremely scarce later in, whereas with my last two playthroughs I was more careful and ended up still spotting them late in the game.
Yes, I'm aware of the irony that snake bites and broken arms are minor in the game, yet the one death I showed from the gameplay footage was from a broken arm. Go figure. :P
One thing I didn't elaborate on since I never encountered it while playing the game is that, in the original version of this game, if and when you lose the game you can write out your own epitaph on your tombstone which can then be encountered by other players who make their way down the trail. I have no idea if the Classic Edition of the game does this or not, though I'd be surprised if it didn't.
